Truth is stranger than fiction…

Candidates always want feedback from prospective employers, but the employers don’t want to provide it.   Candidates can ruin their chances at any point in the recruitment process, from the cover letter/resume, to the phone interview or in person interview.  If employers could tell a candidate the truth, here’s what they might say….

• We’re so glad your cover letter and/or objective on your resume detail that you want a management level position with a progressive health care company.  Too bad we manufacture tires.   Everyone uses the same documents and modifies them.  Be careful and customize both to the prospective employer.
• Thank you for telling us that you were promoted four times in a year and a half on your resume.  We’re fairly certain we can’t live up to that expectation. 
• We appreciate how busy you are looking for a job, but the typos in your resume turn us off.  Call us picky, but maybe your attention to detail isn’t so great.
• The gentleman who dropped off his resume in person was very trendy when he said that he didn’t trust “the computer”, even though we specified applying on line.  Gee, maybe his technology skills aren’t so sharp and following directions isn’t his strong suit.
• Although we’ve always been fond of the song “Highway to Hell”, listening to it on your phone before your phone actually rings when we’re trying to contact you for a phone interview leaves us with the distinct feeling that you’re not serious about your job search.
• You’ve listed your cell phone on your resume.  Why are you so surprised and suspicious when I call it?  I’ve been almost hung up on before I could spit out “You sent me your resume” which instantly changed you from the devil to a darling.  Once we’ve heard the dark side, it’s hard to believe you’ll be consistently sweet and lovely at work.
